Asymmetric warfare is a war fought by two or more polarizing belligerents. Which in short means two or more sides that are not evenly matched. An example would be if the modern day US military were to have to fight off an invading tribe of indians. That's a bit overkill, but its the same concept; a force that is much stronger than another, fighting in fully waged war. This does not make the "weaker" side an automatic loser though. They still have an opportunity to overcome their foe's, especially if the war is being fought in their own homes. They have the advantage of already knowing the geography and knowing where the high ground is and other vantage points.
In an asymmetric war, the weaker side always has the advantage at home. They know the terrain and can definitely use it to their advantage. They can set traps, be right under your noses, and slip by without you ever suspecting a thing. War was changing, and the underdog was now becoming more successful through a strategy called "unconventional warfare". This is basically guerrilla warfare or hit and run tactics. The NVA/VC may have been the smaller more ill equipped force but they were definitely a force to be reckoned with, especially since the war was being fought on their turf.
They developed a series of jungle paths for transport and troop movement over 10,000 miles long! It was called the Ho Chi Minh Trail; named after the communist political leader of North Vietnam. These are the trails that the NVA will use as a staging point for the infiltration of South Vietnam. There were also an elaborate system of underground tunnels known as "Cu Chi" tunnels. These tunnels served as an area for NVA to set up Headquarters, living quarters, logistical depots, and to provide cover. This site is to inform you on the logistical and strategical endeavors of the United States and the NVA during the Vietnam War. Also, the Vietnam War never technically ended, all sides agreed to a "cease fire" and the fighting stopped. Although, the cease fire could be broken at any time and the war could rage on again, but it probably won't.
The Following video is a song by the country band "Big and Rich". In the beginning minute of the song, Chris Christopherson will give back ground information on the song which is about a battle taken place on the 8 of November in Vietnam known as "Operation Hump". Watch it! You might learn something new or even just like the song.
